Captain D's Franchise Model Overview

Captain D's restaurants serve hand-battered fried fish, grilled fish, shrimp, chicken and home-style sides in a fast-casual format with counter ordering, dining room seating and, for freestanding prototypes, a drive-thru. The Nashville-based chain is private-equity owned and operates in 23 states, mostly in the Southeast. It is unusual in that company-owned restaurants outnumber franchised ones, roughly 290 corporate units against about 230 franchised at the end of 2025, and both counts have been slipping. A new freestanding restaurant is a seven-figure build before land, with a full fryer-and-grill kitchen and 20 to 35 employees; smaller endcap and inline prototypes cut the cost roughly in half. Royalty is a comparatively low 4.5 percent, with advertising around two to two and a half percent. Every franchisee signs a development agreement first, and the owner or a designated operator with at least ten percent equity must be personally involved. Terms are long at twenty years.

Ideal owner profile

Hands-on operator or a designated partner with at least 10% equity running the restaurant daily
Experience with high-volume quick-service kitchens, fryer operations and drive-thru throughput
Capital and financing for a seven-figure freestanding build, or mid-six figures for an endcap or inline unit
Multi-unit developers committing to three or more restaurants get sharply reduced franchise fees
Comfortable in a system where the franchisor is also the largest operator
