Chick-fil-A Franchise Model Overview

Chick-fil-A Restaurants are quick-service restaurants built around a boneless breast of chicken sandwich, operated as free-standing, drive-thru-only, mall, in-line or captive-venue units and closed on Sundays. The Operator program is structurally unlike a franchise. Chick-fil-A secures the site, buys or leases the real estate, builds the restaurant and owns most of the equipment; the Operator signs as an individual, pays a nominal initial fee that is partly a working-capital deposit, then pays monthly rent, equipment rental and insurance out of gross receipts, which Chick-fil-A collects and accounts for. Advertising currently costs nothing. The Operator must give full-time personal effort and directly supervise the restaurant; passive or investor ownership is not available, and additional restaurants are offered only at Chick-fil-A's discretion. The agreement runs year to year, can be ended by Chick-fil-A without cause on 30 days' notice, and cannot be sold or transferred to anyone but the Operator's own wholly owned entity. The system is large and growing and reports zero transfers.

Ideal owner profile

An individual, not an investor group; Chick-fil-A contracts only with one person who runs the restaurant
Full-time, hands-on operator willing to directly supervise daily operations with no competing business interests
Comfortable not owning the real estate, building or equipment, and with a year-to-year agreement
Experience leading large hourly teams in a high-volume quick-service environment
Not a fit for anyone seeking a resalable asset; the Operator agreement cannot be sold or transferred
