Taco John's Franchise Model Overview

Taco John's restaurants sell Mexican-style quick-service food, tacos, burritos and the Potato Olés side, through dine-in, carryout and drive-thru. The core format is a freestanding building of roughly 1,900 to 2,250 square feet with 30 to 40 seats and a drive-thru lane; endcap units, a small drive-thru-focused Digital Olé prototype, and non-traditional units in convenience stores and travel plazas also exist. A new freestanding build is a seven-figure project with land, site work and a full kitchen, so an existing location is usually the cheaper way in. Royalty is five percent of net sales and the marketing fee is four percent. The restaurant must be under full-time on-premises supervision by the owner or a certified manager, and all owners sign a personal guaranty. The system is concentrated in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and the Dakotas, has lost units in each of the last three years, and the franchisor has begun adding company stores. Older stores often need remodels at transfer.

Ideal owner profile

Owner-operator or certified full-time manager present during substantially all operating hours
Experience running a drive-thru quick-service restaurant with hourly crews and tight food cost
Capital for a mid-six-figure to seven-figure asset, plus funds for any remodel on transfer
Comfortable with a mature regional brand whose unit count has been shrinking
Multi-unit operators can use area development terms and reduced fees on later units
