SweetFrog Franchise Model Overview

sweetFrog shops sell soft-serve frozen yogurt and other frozen desserts in a self-serve format: customers pull their own yogurt from six to ten machines, add toppings and pay by weight. A traditional shop is an in-line or freestanding retail space of about 1,300 square feet or more, and the investment sits in the mid six figures, mostly leasehold improvements and soft-serve equipment; kiosk, counter and vehicle formats cost less. Because customers do most of the serving, labor needs are modest, though sales are seasonal and lean on families and kids. The brand is owned by MTY Food Group, a large multi-brand restaurant franchisor, and has no company-owned shops. A trained owner, partner or manager must supervise on premises, and spouses sign guaranties. The system has shrunk gradually over three years and still includes legacy licensees on older terms. Transfers carry a transfer fee and transfer training, and an existing shop's buyer gets a 10-year term from signing.

Ideal owner profile

Owner-operator or trained manager on site; semi-absentee only with a strong manager
Comfortable with seasonal sales swings and managing part-time, often teenage staff
Community-minded owner who can drive local family, school and fundraiser traffic
Mid-six-figure capital for a traditional shop, or less for kiosk or vehicle formats
Married owners must have spouses co-sign the franchise guaranty
