The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Franchise Model Overview

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf cafés sell espresso drinks, specialty teas, blended beverages, roasted beans, packaged teas and baked goods from a sit-down café, some with a drive-thru. The franchisor is an Irish entity controlled by Jollibee Foods Corporation, and its U.S. affiliate operates most domestic cafés and provides franchise support. A traditional café is a seven-figure leased build-out dominated by leasehold, equipment and design costs; a kiosk costs materially less, and separate special-distribution formats serve airports, campuses and other contract-foodservice sites. Royalty is 5.5 percent of gross revenues, plus marketing, technology and audit fees. Cafés run long hours, presently 14 hours a day, seven days a week, and each must employ a trained general manager and certified training manager; the owner need not work in the store. The domestic system is small and contracting, with franchised traditional cafés in the low twenties and company units declining. Transfers require a flat fee and buyer training.

Ideal owner profile

Capitalized for a seven-figure café build-out or a smaller kiosk or institutional format
Owner or management team able to staff a general manager and certified training manager
Experience running long-hours, high-labor food and beverage locations
Multi-unit developers can secure area rights with a five-café minimum commitment
Comfortable operating inside a system that is primarily company-run domestically
